LSU wanted its coach gone. It could cost them $54 million.

LSU fired Brian Kelly midway through his fourth season after a 5-3 start, acknowledging a potential buyout of around $54 million that could shrink if he takes another football job. Athletic director Scott Woodward said the blowout loss to 8-0 Texas A&M prompted the move and that the school will negotiate a separation “better for both parties.” The decision echoes Penn State’s recent ouster of James Franklin despite a near-$50 million buyout.
