Arizona sues House over delayed swearing-in

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes sued the US House, arguing Speaker Mike Johnson unlawfully delayed swearing in Adelita Grijalva, elected in late September, by keeping the chamber out of regular session amid the government shutdown. The DC federal lawsuit says the Constitution requires seating qualified members and does not give the Speaker authority to postpone the oath, alleging Johnson is stalling to block a petition on Jeffrey Epstein records and gain leverage in budget talks. Johnson says he’s following a Pelosi precedent and will swear Grijalva in when legislative session resumes.
