Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay, a 1970s vocalist for the Grateful Dead and backup singer for Elvis Presley and Percy Sledge, died Sunday at 78 after a lengthy struggle with cancer, according to a statement. She died at Alive Hospice in Nashville. With the Dead from 1971 to 1979, she appeared on seven albums, sang lead on Sunrise, and delivered live covers including You Ain't Woman Enough and Tomorrow is Forever. She also sang on Suspicious Minds and When a Man Loves a Woman. The statement said those who knew her are united in loss, and the family requested privacy.
