Court Blocks Chicago Guard Deployment, Allows Federal Control

A federal appeals court halted the Trump administration’s bid to send National Guard troops onto Chicago streets, even as it allowed the soldiers to remain under federal control. Upholding U.S. District Judge April Perry, the Seventh Circuit kept deployments off the streets amid heated protests at ICE sites, including confrontations in Broadview. The Pentagon had federalized about 500 Guard members for at least 60 days to protect federal personnel and property. Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul called the decision a victory. A similar court fight is unfolding in Portland, Oregon.
