Gunmen kill Mexican mayor who urged government to tackle violent crime

Gunmen shot dead Uruapan mayor Carlos Manzo during a Day of the Dead event in the city center on Saturday, authorities said. Two suspects were arrested and one assailant died in the attack, which sent crowds scrambling as shots rang out, videos showed. Michoacan, long scarred by organized crime and extortion, has seen repeated political killings; Manzo took office in September 2024 and had joined street patrols in a bulletproof vest, urging federal action in a June video.
