Mexican mayor killed during Day of the Dead celebrations in Michoacan

Uruapan Mayor Carlos Alberto Manzo Rodríguez was shot seven times and killed Saturday night in the town’s historic plaza during Day of the Dead festivities, authorities said. A city council member and a bodyguard were wounded; the attacker was killed at the scene. Officials linked the weapon to earlier clashes between rival criminal groups and said no line of inquiry is ruled out. On Sunday, hundreds dressed in black accompanied his funeral procession, chanting “Justice! Justice! Out with Morena!” Manzo Rodríguez had appealed to President Claudia Sheinbaum for help, accused state authorities of corruption, and was under reinforced protection.
