At least 64 people were killed in Rio de Janeiro’s largest police raid, a joint civil–military operation targeting the Red Command in the Alemão and Penha favelas. Four officers died and more than 80 people were arrested after 2,500 security personnel moved in Tuesday, triggering gunfire, burning barricades and drone-dropped explosives. Officials said at least 50 of the dead were suspected criminals. Dozens, including civilians, were injured. Locals described a “war zone” as roads stayed closed. The UN rights office voiced horror and urged swift, effective investigations. Police seized over 200kg of drugs and dozens of firearms.
