Peru President Declares Lima State of Emergency

Peru’s new president, José Jerí, declared a 30-day state of emergency in Lima on Tuesday amid rising killings, extortion and attacks that fueled protests and the recent ouster of his predecessor. A decree later formalized the measure, which could deploy soldiers to aid police and curb freedoms of assembly and movement. Police recorded 1,690 homicides from January to September, up from 1,502 in the same 2024 period. In Lima on Thursday, a protest demanding Jerí’s resignation turned violent, leaving one civilian dead and about 100 injured. Jerí refused to resign and vowed to go “from defense to offense.”
