Peru breaks diplomatic relations with Mexico over Bettsy Chavez asylum claim

Peru severed diplomatic ties with Mexico after Mexico granted asylum to former prime minister Betssy Chávez, who is under investigation for rebellion tied to Pedro Castillo’s 2022 failed attempt to dissolve Parliament. Foreign Minister Hugo de Zela called the move an “unfriendly act,” and President José Jerí’s office accused Mexico of repeated interference. Prosecutors seek up to 25 years for Chávez as an alleged accomplice. Mexico said it regretted Peru’s decision, arguing the asylum complies with international law and does not constitute intervention. Peru said Mexico ignored demands to respect its sovereignty.
