Illinois deputy found guilty of murder in the shooting of Sonya Massey

A jury in Peoria convicted Illinois deputy Sean Grayson of second-degree murder in the shooting of 36-year-old Sonya Massey, who had called 911 about a prowler. Jurors rejected first-degree murder; Grayson faces up to 20 years or probation and will be sentenced Jan. 29. Body-camera video captured Massey pleading, “Don’t hurt me,” before Grayson fired three shots amid a dispute over a pot of hot water. Family and activists denounced the verdict. The case prompted an Illinois transparency law and a Justice Department agreement on de-escalation training and mental-health response reforms.
