Trump pick to lead federal watchdog agency withdraws after offensive text messages were revealed

President Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the Office of Special Counsel, Paul Ingrassia, withdrew his candidacy after Politico published text messages in which he disparaged the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and described himself as having “a Nazi streak.” Several Republican senators, including Wisconsin’s Ron Johnson, announced opposition, and Senate Majority Leader John Thune urged the White House to pull the pick. The White House said he is no longer the nominee. Ingrassia’s lawyer said the texts might have been manipulated or missing context. Democrats pressed further, with Chuck Schumer urging his removal from a DHS liaison role.
