Republican House leaders accused progressive groups behind the “No Kings” protests of hating America and pressed Democrats for keeping the government shut to appease them. Steve Scalise called the events a “Hate America” rally, while Tom Emmer likened organizers to a “terrorist wing.” Speaker Mike Johnson said Democrats fear an “angry mob.” The coalition, including Indivisible, MoveOn and Public Citizen, blamed Johnson for the shutdown and said people are peacefully coming together. The funding impasse began after most Senate Democrats opposed a House bill over health insurance subsidies. Sen. Chris Murphy rejected claims Democrats are waiting for the protests.
