Amazon lays off thousands of corporate workers as it spends big on AI

Amazon will cut about 14,000 corporate jobs—roughly 4% of its workforce—as it trims bureaucracy and shifts resources toward AI, HR chief Beth Galetti told staff. The move follows investor pressure and pandemic-era hiring, and comes after disappointing AI gains and a major AWS outage that disrupted Venmo, Reddit, Roblox, and Duolingo. CEO Andy Jassy has warned AI-driven efficiencies will reduce corporate headcount over the next few years. Amazon will deliver its latest financial report Thursday. Earlier reports suggested up to 30,000 roles could be affected, as Starbucks and Target also shed corporate jobs.
