Hurricane Melissa upgraded to Category 4, expected to strengthen on Jamaica approach

Rapidly intensifying Hurricane Melissa surged to Category 4 strength Sunday as it tracked northwest in the Caribbean, the National Hurricane Center said. A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Jamaica, with Watches for southwestern Haiti and southeastern Cuba. The NHC expects Melissa to remain a major hurricane, potentially Category 5, with landfall in Jamaica Monday night or early Tuesday, then southeastern Cuba late Tuesday. Forecasters warn of catastrophic flooding, landslides, destructive winds, and life-threatening storm surge up to 9 to 13 feet on Jamaica's south coast, plus 15 to 40 inches of rain across southern Hispaniola and Jamaica.
