US judge rules ICE illegally detained man whose daughter is battling cancer

A federal judge ruled that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement is illegally detaining Chicago resident Ruben Torres Maldonado and ordered a bond hearing by 31 October, though he stopped short of ordering release. Torres, 40, was arrested 18 October as his 16-year-old daughter undergoes treatment for advanced cancer. His attorney called the ruling a win and said they will seek release on bond in immigration court. DHS says Torres lived in the US unlawfully and has driving offenses; officials cited noncooperation during arrest. Family lawyers say his daughter’s care has been disrupted.
