Rome tower collapse near Colosseum leaves one trapped

Part of Rome’s medieval Torre dei Conti collapsed at midday Monday, trapping one worker and injuring another; a second partial collapse followed about 90 minutes later. Three workers inside escaped, and one is in critical condition. Prefect Lamberto Giannini said there were signs of life from the worker still trapped. Rescuers’ attempts through a first-floor window and on ladders failed as the second collapse sent plumes of smoke into the air, so a drone was deployed to locate the worker while teams weighed the risks. Mayor Roberto Gualtieri and Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli visited the site near the Colosseum.
