New York City chooses its next mayor Tuesday, a contest doubling as a test of Democratic direction. Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, faces independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa; incumbent Eric Adams quit in September but remains on the ballot. Mamdani’s rise has split Democrats—House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries endorsed on Oct. 24, while Chuck Schumer had not weighed in as of Wednesday—while Republicans, and Donald Trump, attack him. Mamdani leads spending, $12.8 million to Cuomo’s $12.1 million. Voters will also decide council seats, Alvin Bragg’s bid, Buffalo’s mayor, and a Lake Placid land measure.
