Trump pick to lead federal watchdog agency withdraws

President Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the Office of Special Counsel, Paul Ingrassia, withdrew Tuesday after Politico reported text messages in which he derided the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and said he had “a Nazi streak” at times, prompting GOP revolt. Scheduled for a confirmation hearing this week, Ingrassia said he lacked enough Republican votes and pulled out of Thursday’s HSGAC session. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said he hoped the White House would withdraw the pick; there was no immediate comment. Ingrassia’s lawyer questioned the texts’ authenticity.
