Federal judge rules U.S. attorney in California has been 'unlawfully serving' in role

U.S. District Judge J. Michael Seabright ruled Tuesday that Bilal Essayli has been unlawfully serving as acting U.S. attorney for the Central District of California, the largest federal judicial district. The order bars him from acting duties but permits him to serve as First Assistant. Seabright declined to dismiss cases, saying other prosecutors properly signed filings. On X, Essayli wrote that nothing is changing and that he continues as the top prosecutor, saying he serves President Trump and Attorney General Bondi. The ruling follows setbacks in Nevada and New Jersey, with another appointment challenge set for Virginia.
