Republicans receive secret briefing on cartel strikes

The Trump administration privately briefed more than a dozen Senate Republicans with a secret target list and legal rationale for Caribbean Sea strikes on drug cartels, excluding Democrats and prompting oversight protests. Officials said the materials signaled sustained operations they believe can withstand legal challenges. Since Sept. 2, the military has carried out 14 strikes, killing 61 people and posting videos of exploding boats. Some Republicans defended the process; others urged bipartisan access. House members from both parties were briefed separately. A Democrat said the targets were cocaine shipments and that positive identification of individuals wasn’t required.
