Cameroon’s 92-year-old president, Paul Biya, was declared winner of a controversial eighth term with 53.7% of the vote against opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary’s 35.2%, the Constitutional Council said. The 12 October poll unfolded amid deadly unrest. At least four people were killed during protests in Douala, and a local journalist reported a number of people shot dead near Tchiroma Bakary’s home in Garoua. As authorities stayed silent on the shootings, Biya thanked voters, while shuttered shops and schools and residents’ “graveyard silence” captured the tension.
