Israel says latest remains Hamas returned from Gaza are not of hostages, straining ceasefire

Israel said remains of three people handed to the Red Cross in Gaza were not hostages, clouding a U.S.-brokered ceasefire amid ongoing exchanges of remains. The transfer followed Israel’s return of 30 Palestinian bodies; since Oct. 10, militants have released the remains of 17 hostages while Israel has returned 225 Palestinian bodies, most still unidentified. Tensions spiked after Israeli strikes killed more than 100 people following a soldier’s killing in Rafah. Jordan warned Israel’s military presence imperils the truce and urged a UN mandated stabilization force, as Indonesia offered troops pending a Security Council mandate.
