California Governor Gavin Newsom said he’s weighing a 2028 presidential bid and will decide after the 2026 midterms, telling CBS he’d “be lying otherwise” to deny it. The Democrat, San Francisco’s mayor from 2004–2011 and governor since 2019, has sparred with US President Donald Trump over immigration, National Guard deployments and redistricting. He’s backing California’s push to redraw congressional maps and has labeled Trump “an invasive species” who is “wrecking alliances, truth, trust, tradition, institutions.” Trump, barred from a third term by the Constitution, has hinted there are “methods” to try.
