Cameroon's 92-year-old president Paul Biya, the world's oldest head of state, claimed a controversial eighth term after the Constitutional Council awarded him 53.7% to Issa Tchiroma Bakary's 35.2%. The disputed outcome sparked protests in Douala, Garoua and other cities; security forces used force, leaving at least four dead and dozens of opposition figures and activists arrested. Yaoundé streets fell quiet under armored patrols as Biya stayed out of sight, issuing only a brief statement. Tchiroma, who says he won and posted unverified images of snipers near his home, urged supporters, including in the military, to defend the true result.
