Peru severs ties with Mexico over asylum

Peru severed diplomatic relations with Mexico after learning that former prime minister Betssy Chávez, charged over the alleged 2022 coup attempt by then President Pedro Castillo, was granted asylum at the Mexican Embassy in Lima, Foreign Minister Hugo de Zela announced. He called the decision an unfriendly act and cited repeated interference by Mexican leaders. Relations had already frayed after Mexico sheltered Castillo’s family and its ambassador was expelled. Castillo and Chávez went on trial in March; he remains in preventive custody, she is out on bail, as prosecutors seek 34 and 25 years respectively.
