Flights to LAX halted due to air traffic controller shortage

Flights bound for LAX were temporarily halted Sunday morning after a staffing shortage at a Southern California air traffic facility, the FAA said. The ground stop—imposed at 11:42 a.m. Eastern—held planes at their origin points, producing average delays of about one hour and 40 minutes; officials aimed to lift it by 1:30 p.m. Eastern while possibly keeping traffic limits in place. The move came soon after Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned of mounting delays and cancellations during the shutdown, citing controllers calling in sick and 22 staffing triggers. Similar shortages disrupted Newark, Teteboro, and Fort Meyers.
