Hegseth office tightens congressional contact rules

The Office of Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth issued guidance requiring Defense Department personnel to get prior approval before discussing topics with Congress, from sensitive military operations and strikes on suspected drug boats in Latin America to budget plans, critical minerals, Foreign Military Sales reform, AUKUS, Havana Syndrome, and the electromagnetic spectrum. The move drew criticism from Rep. Don Bacon and heightened frustration on Capitol Hill, where senators said letters on Caribbean and eastern Pacific operations remain unanswered. Democrats also left a briefing furious over absent Defense Department lawyers.
