As a $40 million lawsuit opened, the teacher’s attorney said former Virginia assistant principal Ebony Parker ignored multiple warnings that a 6-year-old had a gun before he shot Abby Zwerner in January 2023. Zwerner was hit in the hand and chest at her classroom reading table, underwent six surgeries, and still lacks full use of her left hand. Her lawyer argued Parker failed to search the boy, remove him, or call police. Parker’s attorney called the event unforeseeable and warned against hindsight. Parker, the suit’s sole defendant, faces a separate trial next month on eight felony child-neglect counts.
