Cameroon Court Declares Biya Winner Amid Unrest

Cameroon’s Constitutional Council declared President Paul Biya, 92, winner of the Oct. 12 vote with 53.66%, ahead of Issa Tchiroma Bakary’s 35.19%, on 57.7% turnout. The ruling followed deadly unrest: at least four protesters were shot dead in Douala as crowds clashed with security forces, and Tchiroma alleged two civilians were killed in his hometown of Garoua. Authorities offered no immediate comment. Officials reported injuries among security forces and at least 105 arrests, as opposition supporters rallied and videos showed barricaded roads and tear gas.
