CBS News obtained access to the Security Map, data from the Impact Project and Public Service Alliance cataloging nearly 2,000 threats to local officials over the past decade. Researchers say violent threats have surged across parties and levels of government; federal officials remain most targeted, but local cases now make up about one-third. Incidents were recorded in every state, with a quarter in seven battlegrounds, and nine verbal or online threats for each physical one. A swatting of Pennsylvania Republican Matt McCaffery, hours after he endorsed Kamala Harris, underscores the chilling effect as tools are offered to protect officials.
