Supreme Court to decide constitutionality of law barring illegal drug users from having guns

The Supreme Court agreed to hear a challenge to the federal ban on firearm possession by unlawful drug users, adding a second gun-rights case to its current term. The Justice Department, under the Trump administration, seeks to overturn 5th Circuit rulings that found the prohibition unconstitutional in most circumstances. The case stems from charges against Ali Danial Hemani after agents found a 9 mm pistol and drugs in his Texas home. Solicitor General D. John Sauer argues the restriction targets dangerous, habitual users and is temporary, citing historical analogues and more than 30 states with similar laws.
