Des Moines schools leader on leave after arrest by ICE agents

Des Moines' largest school district superintendent, Ian Roberts, was placed on paid administrative leave Saturday following his arrest by federal immigration agents who allege he is in the U.S. illegally. The school board cited Roberts' inability to perform duties and will re-evaluate his status as more information becomes available. ICE stated Roberts was subject to a removal order, lacked work authorization, and attempted to flee during his apprehension. Background checks conducted prior to his hiring did not reveal immigration issues.
