Mexico: Lima cuts off diplomatic ties with Mexico over ex

Peru severed diplomatic relations with Mexico after Mexico granted asylum to former Peruvian prime minister Betssy Chávez, who faces charges tied to a 2022 coup attempt. Foreign Minister Hugo de Zela called the move an unfriendly act and accused Mexico of interfering in Peru’s internal affairs, while Mexico rejected the decision as excessive and disproportionate. Prosecutors seek 25 years for Chávez and 34 for ousted president Pedro Castillo, detained since 2022. The rupture follows earlier expulsions and recalls, and comes as Dina Boluarte’s removal saw Congress leader José Jeri sworn in as interim president.
