Syrian leader to visit Washington for coalition talks

Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara will visit Washington this month for the first time since taking power, meeting President Trump at the White House on Nov. 10. A U.S. envoy said he will 'hopefully' sign Syria into the 88-nation coalition against the Islamic State, and Syria’s foreign minister said reconstruction will be discussed. The former rebel leader, once wanted by the United States with a $10 million bounty, has recast himself as a statesman after overthrowing Bashar al-Assad. Despite ISIS’s territorial defeat, the group persists in Syria’s desert as the country navigates a rocky transition.
