White House curbs reporters access to Upper Press

On Friday, the Trump administration halted walk-in access to the West Wing’s Upper Press, requiring appointments and citing security over “sensitive material.” Reporters may still enter the smaller Lower Press. The White House Correspondents’ Association condemned the change as a blow to transparency and accountability. Communications director Steven Cheung said some journalists had secretly recorded offices and sensitive information. The move breaks with a long-running tradition that let reporters question senior aides on the fly and follows earlier limits on press-pool participation and removal of a regular wire-service slot.
