Eye Pokes Force No Contest for Aspinall

UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall will undergo further eye tests after his title defense against Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 ended in a no contest. Gane accidentally poked the Briton in both eyes while throwing a punch late in round one of the Abu Dhabi headliner. Aspinall told referee Jason Herzog, “I can’t see,” and the bout was waved off, leaving him champion. He was taken to hospital and skipped the post-fight news conference. The 32-year-old, who endured major knee surgery in 2022, later called the sport “dangerous” and said eye injuries feel “way scarier.”
