Avalanche in Italy kills five including father and daughter

Five German climbers, including a 17-year-old and her father, died when a fast-moving avalanche hit in Italy’s Dolomites around 16:00 Saturday as they ascended Cima Vertana in the Ortler Alps. Three in one group were swept away and recovered that day before fading light halted operations, rescuers said. Two climbers in a third party survived and raised the alarm. Fog grounded helicopters at first light Sunday; once conditions improved, teams and avalanche dogs were airlifted and continued on foot. By late morning, the father and daughter were found. A rescue spokesperson said unstable snow drifts may have triggered it.
