Hurricane Melissa to Hit Jamaica, Then Cuba

Hurricane Melissa barreled toward Jamaica Monday with Category 4 winds and potential to reach Category 5, threatening up to 30 inches of rain, a near-13-foot storm surge, and “catastrophic” flash flooding and landslides. The storm is forecast to cross Jamaica Tuesday, then eastern Cuba Tuesday night. Officials warned it could be Jamaica’s strongest in decades. Melissa has already killed at least three people in Haiti and one in the Dominican Republic, damaged more than 750 homes, displaced over 3,700 people, and destroyed crops, while closures in parts of the Dominican Republic and hurricane warnings in eastern Cuba.
